What actually happens if I miss a mortgage payment?

I've always paid on time but I'm going through a rough patch financially and might be short this month. I've never been late before. What exactly happens if I miss one mortgage payment? Is there a grace period? At what point does it start affecting my credit, and at what point does the foreclosure process actually begin?
